Meals on Wheels Collin County – March 2019
CELEBRATE THE 2019 MARCH FOR MEALS WITH US!
On March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. For more than 45 years, these critical programs – commonly referred to as Meals on Wheels – have delivered more than just nutritious meals to home-bound seniors in virtually every community across the country. And, the dedicated staff and volunteers who deliver these meals each week provide a vital lifeline and connection to the community, which are sometimes all it takes to keep our senior neighbors at home, where they want to be.
Meals on Wheels programs have come together each March since 2002 to celebrate this proven collaboration of local community organizations, businesses, all levels of government and compassionate individuals to ensure that our seniors are not forgotten. By volunteering, donating or speaking out, you can ensure the seniors in your neighborhood can live more healthy, happy and independent lives at home, where they want to be.
Share with your friends and neighbors this month, the importance of MOWCC, and invite them to join the cause in combating hunger and isolation in our seniors. Your story matters, and they will listen.
What do I do if I have meals left over?
If you have extra meals please ask clients on your route if they would like an extra meal. Or if you see someone that you feel may benefit from a meal, you are welcome to give it away to them. If you are unable to give the meal away, please discard meal – unless you are delivering in McKinney. If you deliver in McKinney, you are welcome to leave meals in the route bag and our staff will store the meal appropriately.
Congratulations to this month’s volunteer of the month, Richard Homans!
For a little over a year, Richard Homans has been delivering meals to MOWCC clients in Frisco. Not only does he run his own route, but he acts as a
substitute driver for any volunteer in the Frisco area, covering over 50% of the sub requests in his city. Richard is known to be open and willing to help and has a heart full of compassion for the seniors. Recently, he told MOWCC that he does this because delivering to the seniors is the highlight of his day.
Every MOWCC volunteer is family, and Richard is one of the prime examples of how wonderful our growing family is.
Thank you, Richard, for being a champion to the seniors.
Volunteer of the month is selected from the MOWCC database of volunteers. Criteria includes being a volunteer for MOWCC at least 6 months, undertaken all necessary training required, follow all policies and procedures set by MOWCC, and a constant willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. Other factors considered are attendance, participating in special projects, and client compliments. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact volunteer services at 972.632.3125 or [email protected].
